Reiki is the Japanese phrase for "Universal life energy"
or, in Takata Sensei's words, "God-power." The word "Reiki"
is sometimes used to refer to the Usui System of Reiki Healing. The
word "Reiki" is often used interchangeably for the energy
and in speaking of the System without distinction. This causes confusion
for students and public alike.
Reiki Precepts for daily living
The five spiritual precepts have been handed down from Dr. Usui
as part of the Oral Tradition. They are a spiritual teaching and
a moral guide to daily living.
Just for today, do not worry
Just for today, do not anger
Honor your parents, teachers and elders
Earn your living honestly
Show gratitude to every living thing
Reiki Symbols
The symbols of the Usui System are energetic keys that access levels
of communion with self, others and the mystery of life. While the
symbols may have power of their own, it is in the relationship created
by initiation, instruction, and use that they have their meaning
and power in the Usui System of Reiki Healing. Through the use of
these symbols, deeper healing, understanding and growth occur.
The task of the Master is to teach the symbols
and their use simply and clearly. As with first degree, it is the
committed practice of the student that brings the gifts of awareness,
growth, and healing.
Reiki Treatment
The form of treatment, both for self and others, is the laying on
of hands in a specific sequence and position. Treatments are the
foundation practice of the form. Through the treatments, self knowledge
and self confidence are gained, revealing more of the mysteries
of the other elements.
The giving and receiving of treatments is
another of the physical ways in which balance and natural order
are demonstrated to the student.
The basic order of the treatment practice
is self, then others. The recent explosion of classes and publicity
has thrust the treatments into another setting. Though people often
use the clinic of Hayashi to demonstrate the necessity for public
practitioners, the context of Japan during that era is very different
from the context of the modern day. The challenge of the community
will be to meet the requests of people who desire treatments in
a public venue without losing the balance of the four aspects. A
deep look at the motivation to "go public" is at hand.
How do we honor the form and continue to follow the evolution of
society and of the System?
